Roe Buck in the Tramlines
A roe buck picks a path through the wheat in hazy golden light, raising his head above the crop as he searches for a doe.
Late July marks the peak of the roe rutting season, when bucks are driven by spiking testosterone to defend their territories and court does. I set up at dusk on the edge of the crop line, making sure I was downwind, and waited as he roamed his territory in search of a receptive doe. This buck is in his prime, the split ear a lasting reminder of the years spent defending his patch of farmland.
