Cliffside Guillemots
The sheer cliffs echo with the raucous calls of nesting guillemots, crowded together on a narrow ledge as sea spray rises from the crashing waves.
The guillemot colony at Durlston is at the southernmost limit of the species’ breeding range and is one of the largest on the south coast. Nesting from April to July, each female maintains a territory little larger than her own body, resulting in a near-constant state of squabbling. Rather than fill the frame with an individual bird, I chose to include the surrounding cliffs to give a sense of the colony’s scale and drama.
